What’s for dinner?
Let’s ask a better question.

Not every night needs a project. It needs a plan that fits the time you have, the energy you don’t, and the things already in your kitchen.

The kitchen, before the cooking

A good recipe should tell the truth.

About the time it takes. The dishes it makes. The step you can skip, and the one you really shouldn’t. That’s the standard for this recipe desk. The recipe file is taking shape; we’re not padding it with things nobody wants to cook twice.

For now, here’s something useful you can take straight to the kitchen: decide what kind of dinner the night can actually support before you decide what to make.

The dinner decision / three questions

Start with the night you’re having.

A tiny framework for the nights when the fridge is open and nobody has a plan.

01

How much time is actually on the clock?

Count prep and cleanup, not just the number in the recipe headline. Twenty minutes is not a challenge to see how fast you can chop.

02

How much effort do you have left?

Time and energy are different budgets. A one-pan dinner or a very good use of leftovers can be exactly the right answer.

03

What needs using first?

Start with the ingredient that won’t wait another day, then build around it. That bunch of herbs is not a moral failing. It is a deadline.

A kitchen note worth keeping

Give yourself a default.

On a low-decision night, don’t start from a blank page. Pick a base, add something substantial and something green, then finish with a bright or crunchy detail. Change the parts to match what you have. You have a direction, not another assignment.
